Printed Materials

Everything you take into the room: a cheat sheet for your hand, full teacher notes for your lectern, a student handout for everyone in the room, and a one-line summary of all twenty-one letters. Print them directly, or download each one as a PDF. The slide deck is here too, as an editable PowerPoint.

Three sides, large type. A clock page for each session, then both hands-on moments in full.

Two-part class · Teacher's cheat sheet

Letters That Changed the World

The running order with a clock, the line each hour rests on, and both hands-on moments in full. Printed large, so you can read it at arm's length.

Session One · 0:00 to 1:00Session Two on page 2Hands-on moments on page 3

Session One · The Other Half of the Conversation

  • 0:004mSession opener: welcome, and the hour in front of us
  • 0:045mWhat we're actually reading
  • 0:095mOne side of the conversation
  • 0:146mWritten for an occasion

  • 0:474mThe shape of a first-century letter
  • 0:512mTake it home: the epistle assignment
  • 0:533mBefore we go

The line this hour rests on

Real, urgent messages written to specific people facing specific crises, not abstract theology textbooks.

We have the reply; the letter that prompted it is gone, so we work out what the other side said.

Epistle assignment · give it at 0:51

Read your epistle a few times, then answer: who wrote it and to whom; what question or situation was being addressed; what stood out most. Bring the answers back next week, and open the next hour by asking who is ready to share.

  • 0:514mHow a careful reader reads
  • 0:553mTake it home
  • 0:582mClosing and blessing

The line this hour rests on

Grace is real, and grace moves. Romans and Galatians say we are justified by faith in Christ; James says that faith does something; Hebrews says Jesus is better than the whole old system.

If you run short

  • Read Romans 3:23-24 out loud and let it sit.
  • Ask which angle they need most this week: faith, works, or hope.
  • Let anyone who wants to read their letter aloud finish it.

If you run long

  • Trim “How a careful reader reads” to two lines.
  • Fold “Faith that moves” into the James line on the three angles slide.
  • Never cut either hands-on moment to save time.

The whole class in one sentence

Real letters, written into real trouble, one side of a conversation, still speaking to real people.

Both hands-on moments, start to finish

The two you never cut

Reconstruct the Conversation · Session One · 0:20 · 12 min

You needthree passages on slips, one per group: Galatians 3:1-5 · Philemon 8-16 · 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. Groups of three or four.

They doread it aloud, then write the question or crisis they think the church sent before anything else. Then read the answer again with that situation in view. Seven minutes to work, then take the two questions printed below, right on that same slide, with two or three groups.

Askwhat was the crisis or question the church sent, and how does knowing the background change how we read the answer today, if it changes it at all?

Hold to itreward evidence over cleverness. No wrong answers if they can point at the text. Take two or three groups, not all of them.

Write Your Own Epistle · Session Two · 0:16 · 12 min

You needpaper and pens, one for every person, before you explain the task. Nothing is collected, and nobody has to read theirs.

They dowrite a short letter in the form they have been studying: a greeting and a thanksgiving, the heart of what they want to say, and a closing blessing. They choose the church, the group, or the person. Most of the twelve minutes is theirs to write; sharing comes at 0:28.

Askwho did you write to, and what did you want them to know most of all? Which part of the form did the work: the thanksgiving, the plain speaking, or the closing blessing? What surprised you as you wrote it?

Hold to itinvite, never require. Let each one finish without comment. This is not a draft to be improved, and the thanksgiving is the hinge: it makes them name what is good before they say the hard thing.
